This is the second of our three Breeders’ Cup previews: the three Saturday races at Keeneland that close the championship card — the Classic, the Distaff, and the Turf, all run on Saturday, October 31. We preview races from one angle only: the pace picture, drawn from the dual-graph pace views on our Breeders’ Cup page at breederscup.thoroughwiz.com. A race gets a pace read here only when its pace view is filled — every runner in the field with a complete early and late pace picture. Of these three, one race meets that standard today. The other two are drawn, and we say plainly below what is still missing.
The Distaff (Keeneland Race 10, 4:58 PM ET, $2,000,000, 1 1/8 miles on dirt, fillies and mares three and up) was drawn Monday with a field of nine, and its dual-graph pace view is filled and live on the Breeders’ Cup page. The field, in post order, with the drawn morning line: 1 Immersive (30/1), 2 Nitrogen (6/5), 3 Regaled (20/1), 4 Fully Subscribed (8/5), 5 Scottish Lassie (15/1), 6 Measure (20/1), 7 Super Corredora (15/1), 8 Splendora (9/2), 9 Eunomia (30/1).
The early graph is top-heavy. Seven of the nine are early types, and the page rates early pressure HIGH. #2 Nitrogen (Mark E. Casse, Jose L. Ortiz) sits alone at the top of the early graph — early rank #1, at the 100th percentile of this field — and projects for the lead. Behind her, #5 Scottish Lassie is early #2 (70th percentile) and #7 Super Corredora early #3 (60th), so Nitrogen is not drawn into a lone-speed trip; there is speed signed on to chase her.
The late graph tells the other half of the story. #4 Fully Subscribed (Chad C. Brown, Flavien Prat) is late rank #1 (81st percentile), with Nitrogen herself late #2 (67th) — the morning-line favorite is in the top two of both graphs, which is what the page tags as versatile. The closers with late figures to notice are #3 Regaled and #8 Splendora, both late #3 (44th percentile), and #6 Measure, late #4 (39th); Regaled and Measure are the field’s two late specialists, and both are drawn at 20/1. The page’s versatile list — top five in both graphs — is Nitrogen, Fully Subscribed, Scottish Lassie, and Splendora.
Read together, the two graphs frame the race as a question: if Nitrogen’s early edge holds under pressure from Scottish Lassie and Super Corredora, she is also the field’s second-ranked late runner, so the closers have to run past a filly who finishes as well as she starts. If the early pressure tells instead, Fully Subscribed owns the strongest late figure in the field, and Regaled and Measure are the longer-priced late runners positioned to pick up the pieces. That is a pre-race scenario view, not a prediction — pace is annotation on this page, and the rankings follow the morning line. The full dual-graph view, every runner ranked early and late, is on the Breeders’ Cup page: breederscup.thoroughwiz.com.
The Classic (Keeneland Race 12, 6:16 PM ET, $7,000,000, 1 1/4 miles on dirt, three-year-olds and up) was drawn Monday with a field of eight: 1 T O Password, 2 Sovereignty, 3 Golden Tempo, 4 The Puma, 5 Forever Young, 6 Magnitude, 7 Knightsbridge, 8 Napoleon Solo.
Its pace view is not filled, and this preview makes no pace claim for it. The post-draw past-performance edition was obtained and every North American runner’s pace picture is complete, but #1 T O Password has raced only overseas, and no free past-performance source prints pace figures for foreign races — so under the rule this page runs on, the race stays pending rather than half-filled. The next fill attempt is Thursday, October 29, and the status will change on breederscup.thoroughwiz.com if the picture completes.
One consequence of that status, stated plainly: the Classic heads the ladder we set on October 22 for Saturday’s free race on thoroughwiz.com (Classic, then Turf, then Mile), but a free race is only presented as available once its pace view is actually filled. The Classic is not filled, and neither are the Turf or the Mile today, so no Saturday free race is being presented as available in this post. The ladder stands; the pin waits for a filled race.
The Turf (Keeneland Race 11, 5:36 PM ET, $5,000,000, 1 1/2 miles on turf, three-year-olds and up) was drawn Monday with a field of fourteen: 1 Ethical Diamond, 2 Benvenuto Cellini, 3 Minaret Station, 4 Far Bridge, 5 El Cordobes, 6 Burnham Square, 7 Hotazhell, 8 Test Score, 9 Johanna Walsh, 10 Tiffany, 11 Survie, 12 Diamond Necklace, 13 Bay City Roller, 14 Deep Monster.
Its pace view is also pending, and again there is no pace read here. The post-draw edition was obtained and every North American runner’s pace picture is complete, but Benvenuto Cellini, Hotazhell, Johanna Walsh, Survie, Diamond Necklace, Bay City Roller, and Deep Monster raced only overseas, where free past-performance sources print no pace figures. The field is drawn; the pace view waits on the same Thursday, October 29 fill attempt.
Three races, three honest statuses: the Distaff is filled and previewed above from its live pace view; the Classic and the Turf are drawn fields with pace views pending, and they will get their pace reads only when every runner’s picture is complete. All three races, and the other eleven championship races, are tracked on one page: breederscup.thoroughwiz.com.
