Reading the Sheet · No. 1

The pick and the backup order

Every race on the picks sheet carries one pick. Not a pair of co-picks, not a shortlist — one horse is the booked selection for that race, and the day’s accounting settles on that one leg. This first installment in the Reading the Sheet course covers where that pick sits, and what stands behind it when it does not run.

Most races are filed as a scenario pair: one horse for the version of the race where the pace holds up, and one for the version where it falls apart, each with a likelihood. The pick is the pole with the larger raw margin between the two scenarios. The other scenario’s horse is not discarded. It becomes the first name in the backup order — the chain the race falls back through if horses scratch.

The backup order reads in a fixed sequence:

Today’s Penn National Race 1 shows the order in print. The official pick is #2 Our Notion at 2/1, filed under the controlled-pace scenario at 55%. Behind it stands #1 Standpoint at 3/1, the pick for the other scenario, and then #4 Coach Kriv at 7/2, the filed alternate. If Our Notion scratches, Standpoint is the booked leg. If both scratch, Coach Kriv is. No new pick is invented on the day; the chain was filed with the race in the morning.

Scratches are where the chain earns its place. On yesterday’s settled card, three official picks scratched, and each of those legs settled on the first backup in the chain that actually ran — the second scenario’s pick first, then the filed alternates. The settled page shows the promoted horse in the selection slot and names the scratched pick in a note, so the record shows both what was filed and what ran. If every horse in a chain scratches, the race settles as no leg at all: the sheet prints that plainly rather than reaching outside the filed order for a substitute.

The 30-second read: find the pick, then read the names behind it from left to right. That order is the whole rule. The backup chain is not a second opinion and it is not extra coverage — it is the same one pick, protected against the one thing morning filings cannot control, which is who actually loads into the gate. The next installment takes up the Closer Look, the comment printed under each pick, and the filed facts it is built from.

Post 1:00 PM ET · 6 Furlongs · Dirt · MC 20000
If the pace stays honest (65%): #3 Givemethebeat (2/1)
John A Hancock · Jose L Ortiz
Givemethebeat is the morning-line favorite with a named sheet edge — a clear-margin blended late-graph lead of 30 points (late 100, profile (c) at 100); three early-committed rivals keep the pace honest and his finish is the field's best.
